01/01/2008      Is your workplace free of Age Discrimination?

The Age Discrimination Regulations came into force on the 1st October 2006. These have been welcomed by individuals and anti-ageist pressure groups alike, as previously there was no legislation in force that dealt with age discrimination in Great Britain

Bill Martin, an employment solicitor at Curtis Parkinson explains: “This legislation will have a major impact on almost all aspects of an organisation’s employment policies; including: recruitment, training, promotion opportunities, pay and benefits, dismissal, redundancy, retirement and pensions.”

He continues: “Ageism is commonplace in business and will not disappear overnight; I would advise companies to start planning now to change existing policies and to develop a working culture that fits the regulation.”

Companies that ignore this regulation are liable for a raft of penalties including: discrimination, unfair dismissal and constructive dismissal.

For further information on how to plan for this and avoid penalties contact Bill Martin on 0115 931 7000.
